Advanced Apprenticeship and Research in Art Conservation: Students discuss, practice, and research topics and treatments relating to the examination, analysis, treatment, and collections care of cultural property.

Chemical and Physical Techniques Used in the Examination of Art Materials: Student learn about various analytical and physical techniques used by scientists to characterize art materials.  Students create a science proposal in which they pose a question pertaining to a specific piece of art or material used.  Then, students implement their proposal, use the instruments and techniques they learned about, and then write a report on their findings.

Preventive Conservation Research and Applications: This course will help build a research community while students complete an independent project focused on either preventive conservation research or the application of preventive conservation principles.

Treatments

  • The Nebulae, 1929, Robert Winthrop Chanler, oil on canvas.

    • Consolidated lifting paint around tears.  Learned and implemented thread-by-thread tear mending to stabilize tears in the canvas.

Additional Experiences

  • Artists’ Material Collection

    • Added recent donation to FileMaker (collection database), photographed objects, created paint drawdowns, created housing and placed objects in storage.

  • Gallery Condition Checks

    • Reviewed records in FileMaker for paintings in the galleries, checked the current condition of the painting, and updated records in FileMaker.  Used a soft bristle brush to gently remove dust from the surface of the paintings.  If painting was glazed, used a soft cloth to remove finger prints.

Material focus: objects and textiles

Treatment

  • Chinese Burial Temple, date unknown, once known artist, soapstone.

    • Measured and cut carbon fiber rods to replace deteriorating original pegs.  Reattached broken pieces with B72 in acetone.  Create instructions and annotated diagram identifying how to assemble object.

  • Taichi, 1985, Ju Ming, bronze.

    • Applied patina to and tone newly welded areas.  Washed, rinsed, and dried.  Applied tinted wax and buffed surface.

  • Lion sculptures, c. late 1800s, once known artist, concrete.

    • Stabilized cracks in concrete.  Created fills.

  • Pastoral Staff, c. 1890s, once known artist, sting-ray leather, aluminum, gold, enamel.

    • Removed leather from handle and humidified to reshape and flatten.  Reduced aluminum corrosion mechanically.  Assisted with reattaching leather to handle.

  • Billiard ball table pockets, c. 1800s, once known artist, leather, textiles.

    • Created leather fills for areas of loss.  Recreated textile to be used as a fill by color matching paint, applying it to a new textile, and recreating the design in the paint prior to it drying.

  • Trunk cover and trunk, c. late 1800s, attributed to S. L. Clements, canvas, leather, wood, metal.

    • Surface cleaned, consolidated red rot, applied patches to holes and tears, lined canvas trunk cover,

  • Silver fish pendant, c. mid 1900s, casted silver fish and blue ribbon.

    • Removed double sided tape and adhesive residue, lined ribbon, used couching stitches to reattach detached ribbon section, surface cleaned and removed silver tarnish, created mounting board.

  • Cruet Set: Silver Stand, 1862, designed by Christopher Dresser and manufactured by Hukin & Heath, sterling silver and glass.

    • Performed solubility and cleaning tests, removed lacquer, removed silver tarnish, adhered silver component onto its glass component, and applied lacquer coating.

  • Pinkerton, B 04-11-03, 2004, Jun Kaneko, cast bronze with patina and steel table with patina, located outside.

    • Washed, rinsed, and dried. Removed corrosion from top of mild steel table and applied protective coating. Applied wax to bronze and buffed into surface.

  • Migrating Pedmarks, designed 1998 and cast 2008, Lynda Benglis, cast bronze, located outside.

    • Washed, rinsed, and dried. Applied tinted wax to interior and shoe polish to exterior.

  • The Seated II, 2019, Wangechi Mutu, cast bronze, located inside.

    • Dry dusted, applied wax, and buffed surface.

  • Second Daughter, 1989, Deborah Butterfield, cast bronze, located outside.

    • Washed, rinsed, and dried. Applied wax and buffed surface.

  • Vermont (The Autumn), 1984, Jim Dine, cast bronze, located outside.

    • Washed, rinsed, and dried. Applied hot wax and buffed surface.

  • Pair of Parallelogram Chairs, Scott Burton, 1987, polished balmoral granite, located outdoors.

    • Washed, rinsed, and dried.

  • Moon Mirror, Josiah McElheny, 2019, stainless steel with pressed colored prismatic glass, located outdoors.

    • Washed, removed corrosion, rinsed, and dried.

    • Created log sheet for tracking damages to the glass panels.

    • Performed microscopy analysis on thread samples.

    • Mounted textile fragment onto a permanent mount for storage and exhibition.

  • Assisted with integrated pest management (IPM) and gallery cleaning.

  • Assisted conservators with security reported incidents including water leaks, insect activity, and visitors touching artwork.

  • Wrote treatment reports and uploaded to Articheck, a digital art condition reporting program.

  • Model airplanes, artist unknown, c. mid-late 20th century, balsa wood, metal, and plastic, treatment ongoing.

    • Consolidation, surface cleaning, assisting with replacing missing and degraded pieces, and reattaching detached components.

  • Lecture Chart, Archibald Willard, early 20th century, distemper on canvas.

    • Surface cleaned, removed loose threads along the edges and at tears, applied damp blotters and weights to relax wrinkles, reinforced tears and holes with rayon tissue coated with Beva 371, attached PeCap 7-330T coated with Beva 371 with a tacking iron for strip lining.

  • Mural for Black House, artist unknown, c. 1970-72, acrylic on canvas.

    • Mechanically removed old glue from back of canvas, attached canvas insert, assisted conservators with lining.

  • Objects and facsimiles related to the establishment of Alcoholic Anonymous, 20th-century.

    • Removed old mounts, surface cleaned, created, and installed custom Mylar photo corners for facsimiles, and assisted with securing linen to Coroplast for display cases at a Summa Health wellness center in Akron, OH.

  • Rehoused materials from 1901 Freemasons time capsule prior to treatment.

  • 19th and 20th century frame treatments.

    • Consolidated loose gesso, removed surface grime, inpainted areas of loss.

    • Removed detached pieces of plaster, secured loose pieces of plaster, removed surface grime, inserted a mixture of methyl cellulose, microballoon glass bubbles, and titanium white pigment in large crevices, inpainted smaller areas of loss.

  • Created custom storage box & insert for 19th-century medicine vials.

ICA Education Collection

  • Education Collection Inventory.

    • Worked with other interns to create and update a searchable education collection inventory spreadsheet.

    • Inventoried, documented, and photographed collection.

  • African textile samples documentation and rehousing.

    • Photographed and rehoused samples in mylar envelopes.

Ohio Heritage Emergency Response Association (OHERA) Spreadsheet

  • Worked as part of a team to create a master list of heritage organizations in Ohio for use by first responders and county offices of emergency management.

    • Began going county by county in Ohio to find historical landmarks, historic houses, museums, libraries, archives, archeological sites, and performing arts organizations.

    • Each entry includes the name of organization, address, GPS coordinates, and contact information.

  • Inputted information into a master spreadsheet.

    • All 88 counties in Ohio have been mapped and the final master spreadsheet has 5,533 entries.

  • White paper written.

  • Supervised two other summer interns, Summer 2021.

    • Assigned counties and reviewed quality of work.
